(Kaieteur News) – The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Seven has disclosed that final works are underway to have the new $213 million Karrau Secondary School in the Lower Mazaruni fully completed and ready for the new academic year.
The RDC recently reported that Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr. Josh Kanhai, joined by Toshao Shane Cornelius, visited the school and inspected the final works ongoing there, noting that “construction and furnishing [is] now 99.5% complete.”
“Discussions also focused on the final preparations to ensure the school is thoroughly cleaned, with all furniture cleaned, arranged, and classrooms fully organised, creating a safe, welcoming, and conducive learning environment for students and teachers ahead of the new academic term,” the RDC posted on its Facebook page.

Kaieteur News reported that the school project was awarded to Troy Dainty Construction through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), and the school is expected to accommodate some 300 children.
Karrau, an Amerindian village with approximately 500 residents, is located in the Lower Mazaruni, some five minutes away from Bartica by boat. The village currently has a primary and nursery school housed in one building, with secondary-aged students having to travel to neighbouring Bartica to attend school.
Speaking previously with this publication on the school project, Toshao Cornelius related that Karrau is regarded as one of the fastest-growing communities, so establishing a secondary school there could have a transformative impact on the community.
Expounding further, he said the new school will improve access to education. “Currently, students of Karrau and neighbouring communities travel long distances to reach the nearest secondary school, which is costly, time-consuming, and unsafe. A local secondary school would eliminate these barriers, making education more accessible and ensuring students can attend regularly,” he noted.
He stated that the school can enhance academic performance, noting that with easier access, students would have more time and energy to focus on their studies.
Among other transformative impacts, the Toshao related that the school would reduce dropout rates, provide economic growth and job creation, and improve health and safety among children. Cornelius is of the view that difficulty in accessing secondary education often leads to higher dropout rates in remote communities. By providing a school within the village, students are more likely to continue their education, increasing the likelihood of completing secondary school.
“A secondary school in Karrau Village could serve as a cornerstone for the community’s social, economic, and cultural development, shaping a brighter future for the young people in and around Karrau,” Toshao Cornelius expressed.
When completed, the secondary school will benefit not only Karrau but also Batavia and nearby communities. Karrau Secondary is among four new secondary schools currently being constructed in Region Seven.
