Man shot after pulling toy gun on police
(Kaieteur News) – A 27-year-old man is now hospitalised under police guard with a gunshot wound under his left armpit, after he allegedly pointed an air gun (toy gun) at police on Wednesday along the Schoonard Highway, West Bank Demerara.
Police said ranks were at the time responding to reports that an armed-man was walking along the highway.
The air gun recovered by police.
According to police, as the ranks approached him, he pulled the gun from his waist and pointed it at them.
Ranks feared that it was a real gun, and one fired a shot at him.
After he was struck, he dropped the weapon in a nearby trench and ran into a rice field nearby.
Police went after him and he was arrested and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he is receiving treatment under police guard.
The gun was recovered and later identified to be a Glock Air Pistol.
Air guns are not lethal and are used in sporting activities. They use pressurised air to discharge pellets and other materials.
