Cutlass, stone attack spark panic near One Mile Primary
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the School Welfare Unit have launched an investigation into a violent altercation near the One Mile Primary School, Region Ten, on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. near the school’s back gate along the One Mile Public Road.
Official reports from the Department of Education Region Ten indicate that the dispute originated between a secondary school student and one of several male siblings living in the neighbourhood, before spilling over toward the school premises.
Education authorities issued a statement clarifying that regular classes had ended and the main student body had been dismissed prior to the incident. Only Grade Five and Grade Six pupils participating in after-school academic programs remained on the compound.
The Department confirmed that no pupils from One Mile Primary School were involved in or targeted during the confrontation. Welfare officers and guidance counsellors are currently handling the case under the Ministry of Education’s Protocol for Safe and Secure Schools, which mandates disciplinary oversight for students involved in off-campus misconduct.
Officials also urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified claims online, warning against the sensationalisation of incidents involving minors.
In contrast to the Department’s statement, Region Ten Councillor Mark Goring offered his account, alleging that a group of youths armed with cutlasses and stones entered the area to attack a student, creating widespread panic. Citing video footage of the scene, Goring commended the school’s Head Teacher and staff for attempting to control the situation, but noted that the single security guard on duty was forced to seek safety.
Goring called on the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education to conduct a full investigation and release the findings to parents, coordinate directly with the Guyana Police Force to identify and charge those responsible, and immediately review security measures across all regional schools by raising guard salaries to recruit more capable personnel.
He criticised current security wage scales, stating that low pay leaves schools reliant on elderly guards and single mothers who are ill-equipped to handle armed intruders.
