The Constitutional Reform Commission (CRC) is considering new approaches to stimulate greater public participation in the reform process, following a low response to its call for written submissions.

AG Nandlall, a member of the commission, said the body is prepared to commence wider public consultations but has received only six submissions since issuing its public advisory several months ago.

According to the Attorney General, the submissions received so far have also raised concerns about their relevance to the constitutional reform process.

“It is clear that the Constitutional Reform Commission is not proceeding at the pace that we would have liked it to proceed,” Nandlall told members of the press.

He explained that the commission had initially planned its public engagement around written submissions, with the advisory providing until December for members of the public to submit their views.

However, the limited response has prompted consideration of whether the requirement for written submissions should remain a prerequisite before the commission proceeds to broader consultations.

“We may have to find another mechanism of exciting public interest in the process, or reconsider whether written submissions ought to be a condition precedent for going out to public consultation,” the attorney general said.

Nandlall said the matter will be raised for discussion at the commission’s next meeting, where members will determine the way forward.

The commission’s efforts form part of the broader national process aimed at examining Guyana’s constitutional framework and identifying areas for reform.

With the submission period remaining open until December, the commission is expected to assess the level of public participation and determine how best to encourage citizens and stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the process. (DPI)
