$330M contract awarded for reconstruction of Kingston Secondary
(Kaieteur News) – The National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), on its website, announced that a $330,026,300 contract has been awarded for the reconstruction of Kingston Secondary School in Georgetown.
The project, being executed through the Ministry of Education, was awarded to Profab Plus Welding/Fabrication & General Contracting Services, which was among 62 contractors that bid for the contract.
The project was initially estimated to cost $371,377,630, according to the government engineer’s estimate.
The Ministry of Education has been constructing new schools across the country to ensure children have access to education. The ministry has also been rehabilitating and rebuilding nursery and primary schools to address overcrowding and provide improved learning environments for students and teachers.

During the presentation of this year’s Budget, Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, said that over the last five years, more than 100 new schools were constructed or rehabilitated countrywide.
In 2026, a total of $24.3 billion was earmarked for the completion of more than 40 schools, including Falls Top and Kanapang Nursery Schools, Cracrana and Diamond No. 2 Primary Schools, and Karaudarnau and Kwebanna Secondary Schools. Works are also expected to advance on student dormitories at Jawalla, North West, Port Kaituma, Santa Rosa and Waramadong, Singh disclosed.
At a recent commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag said that with the commissioning of some 18 new secondary schools this year, the country is on track to achieving universal access to secondary education by the end of 2026.
“With the completion of several secondary schools by the end of this year, we will be achieving universal access to secondary education. So that is a huge deal because we already have that in primary but secondary education, we will be able to achieve that,” Parag said.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Mid-Year Report, recently released by the Ministry of Finance, revealed that of the $183.6 billion allocated to the education sector in 2026, $85.4 billion was spent during the first half of the year.
The report further noted that of the $24.3 billion budgeted for school infrastructure, $6.1 billion was spent on construction, rehabilitation and maintenance countrywide, including the completion of 10 schools.
Works were completed at Falls Top and Kanapang Nursery Schools, Karaudarnau Secondary School and Santa Rosa Dormitory, while work continues on more than 30 facilities countrywide.
