(Kaieteur News) – A subcontractor attached to the China Railway First Group was electrocuted early Friday morning after coming into contact with a live wire while conducting pipe-laying works near Congress Place, Sophia.
According to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), the incident occurred around 01:00 hrs. and also disrupted electricity supplies to several communities in the area.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, GPL said the accidental contact with its live electricity network caused the company’s Sophia F3 feeder to trip, resulting in interruptions to electricity service in Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville, for approximately one hour.
The company added that its Sophia F6 feeder also went offline for about 30 minutes, affecting customers in Areas A to E, Field Sophia.
GPL extended condolences to the deceased’s family and friends as they come to terms with his death.
The company also reminded contractors undertaking work near electricity infrastructure to follow established safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.
These measures include coordinating with GPL before commencing work, identifying potential electrical hazards and ensuring that the necessary protective measures are in place before proceeding.
GPL urged everyone working near its electricity network to make safety a priority at every stage of their operations.
