(Kaieteur News) – The body of 14-year-old Daveanand Balram was found one day after he was reported missing after swimming with friends.
The teen’s mother, Gayatree Rambhajan, confirmed the shattering discovery to Kaieteur News on Wednesday.
Balram, also called Ritesh, and ‘White Boy’, of No. 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was among three other friends at a location within that area on Monday. His mother told this publication that her son’s friends were attempting to teach him to swim when the tragedy occurred.
Rambhajan explained that her son was clinging to a piece of wood while his panicking friends reportedly went to get help.
“They said he hold on to a wood and the boy go to bring some boat man to pick him up, but they ain’t find him. By time they come back, the water wash he away,” the agonising mother expressed.
A search got underway on Monday evening into Tuesday, but proved unsuccessful, even after a joint operation along the Corentyne River between the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and its Surinamese counterparts, and family members and friends.
Police in Region Six in a statement confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the discovery, which was made at 07:00hrs, in the vicinity of the Dukestown Foreshore, Corriverton, Berbice.
Preliminary investigation revealed that family members resumed searching about 06:00hrs On Wednesday when his body was discovered.
Balram’s body was found lying face down in a crouched position between several rocks, clad in a boxer short. It was in an advanced state of decomposition.
The body was examined and no marks of violence were observed.
Rambhajan was hoping that her son would be found alive.
Balram’s body was taken to the Ramoo’s Funeral Home. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Friday.
Investigations are ongoing.
