– Six new appointees to take the bench

(Kaieteur News) – The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced that appointment of Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman to serve the Judiciary of Guyana in the post of Chief Magistrate.

The appointment which was made by the Commission on 7^th January, 2025 will take effect from that date. Latchman has in excess of 16 years experience as a magistrate and has served at several tiers of justice system. She is a qualified and experienced attorney who is a fellow of the Commonwealth Judicial Institute and member of the Commonwealth Magistrate and Judges Association as well as the judicial education institute of Guyana.

The JSC also announced the appointment of six new magistrates.

In a press release issued on Monday, the commission said the successful appointees are Ocelisa Marks, Nikkisha Logan, Jimelle Joseph, Shareefah Parks, Taneisha Saygon and Caressa Henry.

According to the JSC, the new magistrates will officially take the Oath of Office before Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips on Wednesday, 15^th July, 2026.

Ocelisa Marks

According to the press release, Ocelisa Marks obtained her Bachelors of law Degree in 2017 and a legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2019. She also obtained a Certificate of Participation in Mediation Advocacy in 2019. In 2019, Ms. Marks was appointed State Counsel within the Chambers of the Attorney General a position she still holds.

Nikkisha Logan

Nikkisha Logan obtained a Bachelors of Law Degree from the University of the West Indies in 2017and a legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2019.

She obtained a Masters of Laws Degree in Corporate and Commercial Law in 2023. She worked in private practice from 2019 to 2020 and served as senior director of legal services/ corporate secretary at Guyana Office for Investment from 2020 to present.

Jimelle Joseph

Ms. Jimelle Joseph obtained Bachelors of Laws Degree from the University of Guyana in 2018 and a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in 2020. She commenced her career in private law firm and later served as legal assistant to the Chancellor of the Judiciary, a position she currently holds.

Shareefah Parks

Shareefah Parks obtained an associate Degree in Communications in 2013, bachelors of law degree from the University of Guyana in 2018 and a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in 2020. She later obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Criminology and Victimology. She is presently pursuing a Master of Law Degree in law and Dispute Resolution at Robert Gordon University, Scotland. She commenced her legal career in private practice from 2020 to 2022 from joining the Environmental Protection Agency in 2022 as legal adviser. She was later elevated to the post of senior legal adviser a position she still holds.

Taneisha Saygon

Taneisha Saygon obtained a Bachelors of Law Degree from the University of Guyana in 2018 and a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding law School in 2020. She has served as a prosecutor within the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions since 2020.

Caressa Henry obtained a Bachelors of Law Degree from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2021. She obtained a certificate in anti-corruption and asset recovery in 2025. Ms. Henry obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Management in 2015 and currently serves as state counsel in the chambers of Director of Public Prosecution.
