(Kaieteur News) – Thirty-four-year-old Omar King Charles of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, is appealing for public support as he battles a life-threatening brain tumor that has already robbed him of the vision in one eye and now requires urgent surgery in India.
Charles was diagnosed in May with a meningioma, a tumor that develops in the meninges-the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While most meningiomas are slow-growing and non-cancerous, they can cause serious neurological complications by pressing on the brain, nerves, or blood vessels.
Doctors have informed the family that the tumor has wrapped around a major blood vessel by approximately 180 degrees and is compressing his left optic nerve. As a result, Charles has lost vision in his left eye and can now only distinguish silhouettes. They were also advised that Guyana is unable to perform the difficult surgery.
Before his diagnosis, Charles worked tirelessly to support his family, taking on jobs in weeding, power washing, gardening and landscaping. He also worked as a K-9 trainer but was forced to give up that career as his health deteriorated.
His wife, 33-year-old Melissa Vaughn Charles, said the diagnosis has turned their lives upside down.
The couple has four daughters, aged 11, 7, 4 and 2. Melissa said they have deliberately shielded the children from the full extent of their father’s illness so it does not affect them emotionally or interfere with their schooling. “I didn’t want them to be affected with school,” she said.
Melissa, a home nurse and founder of Gifted Hands Home Nursing Services, is now the family’s primary breadwinner. To help meet household expenses and raise money for the operation, the family has also begun selling homemade local juices and protein shakes.
“I’m accustomed to Omar being a hardworking husband who loves nature. He would teach our children the importance of plants and even set up a little plant shop for them,” Melissa said.
“He’s not the type of person who likes to ask for help. It was difficult convincing him to seek assistance from the public.”
The family is now seeking to raise GY$4 million to cover the cost of surgery, travel, accommodation and other medical expenses.
“We are praying for the opportunity to get him the treatment he urgently needs. This diagnosis has changed every part of our lives. Financially, the burden has been overwhelming, and we are doing everything we can to give him a chance at treatment,” Melissa said.
If the funds are secured, Charles will travel to India, where a specialist neurosurgeon will attempt the delicate procedure to remove the tumour while protecting the major blood vessels and preserving the vision in his right eye.
Despite the challenges, the family remains hopeful that public support will give Charles the chance to undergo the life-saving surgery.
