Kaieteur Sports – New Zealand easily pulled the series back in their favour while keeping themselves in the hunt thanks to a fantastic 5-fer spell from left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox which essentially handed the visitors a much-needed 5-wicket win at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence last night.

Shrugging off a tough loss in the opener, the Kiwis took a different approach for game 2, assessing the conditions at Providence expertly as their spinners triggered a swift Windies batting collapse, keeping the Caribbean side to a measly 138 all out.

Opting to bowl first paid off for the Black Caps, who disrupted the ominous-looking 58-run opening stand between top-scorer John Campbell (33) and Ackeem Auguste (17).

But the introduction of Kiwi spinner Lennox proved to be the turning point, as the left-arm slower bowler controlled the innings with his career-defining spell of 5-19 from 8 overs.

All-rounders and fellow spinners Michael Bracewell (2-51) and Captain Mitchell Santner (2-0) all played a role in ensuring the Windies’ 10 wickets would fall for 75-runs by the end of their innings; after being almost 60 without loss at one stage.

New Zealand would lose a few key wickets on the way in the form of openers Henry Nicholls (17) and Will Young (28) alongside top-scorer from game 1, Daryl Mitchell (28).

Veteran middle-order batsman, Tom Latham showed his experience by maintaining a cool head with a classy 37 not out (2×4), as he and Bracewell who hit 3 fours in his 24*, saw their team to 141-5 in the 33rd over thus completing the team’s 400th ODI win with 104 balls remaining.

West Indies bowlers never gave up despite having their work cut out for them due to the low score, with spinner Khary Pierre (2-33), homeboy Gudakesh Motie (1-32) and fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph (1-23) doing their best to keep the game as competitive as possible.

Meanwhile, the third and final game at Providence will bowl off Thursday with the Windies seeking as much momentum as possible before the two sides skip over to Barbados for the remainder of the series.

Scores: New Zealand 141 for 5 (Latham 37*) beat West Indies 138 (Campbell 43, Lennox 5-19) by five wickets.
