Pensioner killed in West Berbice accident
(Kaieteur News) – News of a fatal incident disrupted a wedding celebration on Sunday at Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, as relatives of a 78-year-old man received details that he was involved in a vehicular accident and was left lying on the road.

Kundal Persaud, a pensioner of Lot 51 Bacchus Street, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, lost his life after he was reportedly struck from his electric bicycle while on his way from a wedding reception on Sunday evening, his relatives confirmed to Kaieteur News on Monday.

Esther Persaud, one of his daughters, said her father prepared himself for the occasion close to nightfall. She said he was reluctant to go, citing health concerns, but decided eventually to proceed to the family event to show his support.
“His brother had a little wedding. His brother’s granddaughter marrying. He didn’t want to go the wedding because he sick. You know, old person, not able with the hassle. So he go, show he face, give hugs, kiss and thing, and drink a Vita Malt and he (prepared to) come home back,” she disclosed.
Based on information the family received, the elderly man was making his way to the junction to turn in the direction of his home, when a car driven by a 25-year-old East Canje man slammed into him. The impact caused him to be thrown to the road, receiving critical injuries.
The incident occurred around 8:00pm.
“I was home. People start to call us and tell us that our father meet in an accident. My daughter went to the wedding too, and she run out on the road and she see him lying down on he face in a pool of blood,” she related.

By the time they arrived on the scene, the man’s brother, who had left the wedding reception following the news, had already assisted the police in taking the man to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
This publication confirmed that the driver of the motorcar is in police custody. Persaud’s daughters are calling for the full measure of the law to be administered to the individual they hold responsible for their father’s death. They noted that he was sickly but managed to move around fairly ok on his e-bike, and clarified that he was not intoxicated.
“My father is very Ill. He’s 78 years old. He don’t drink. He’s taking medication from the hospital. He goes to the hospital every month to do checking up as a pensioner. Since he fall sick, from January to now, no alcohol,” Esther told this publication.
The family disclosed that he died on the spot. A post-mortem was conducted on Monday, indicating that he died from multiple injuries.
Pained over the manner in which her father met his demise, another daughter, Angela Deosarran pleaded for a full investigation into the incident.
“I want justice for my father, because this accident (and the way he died) is worse than an animal. My father went out with a brand-new electric bike and it come home bruk up. We need justice,” she expressed.
The man lived alone in a three-bedroom, two-storey property, which also housed a small shop that he operated.
