(Kaieteur News) – Officials in Region Six who are monitoring the recent emergence of COVID-19 cases have confirmed a decline in reported cases, attributing this positive to measures applied by authorities to tackle the virus.
At Thursday’s statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Regional Executive Officer (REO) Ronald Harsaywack acknowledged a spike in the virus several weeks ago, but noted that the situation is being managed.
“Indeed, a month and a half ago, we had cases of COVID in the region. We didn’t have an outbreak of COVID in the region. We need to make that clear,” Harsaywack said.
Concerns were raised after the virus was first discovered at the Training College at Port Mourant, Corentyne.
He noted that the facility was immediately locked down and students – 27 of whom were confirmed infected – were placed under quarantine. They were subsequently cleared and sent home.
The second school that confirmed the presence of COVID was the Port Mourant Primary School. The REO highlighted an interrelation with the origin of cases at the GuySuCo Training College and the Port Mourant Primary School, reporting to the council that contact tracing revealed that two siblings of those institutions were responsible for the spread to the facilities.
In such cases, headteachers are required to promptly communicate with the Regional Education Officer (REdO), who in turn will notify the Ministry of Education which will provide guidance on the way forward.
On the medical aspect, the Regional Health Officer (RHO) dispatched a rapid response team to the schools.
“We would’ve tested the students within that classroom to see who were positive based on symptoms that they displayed. Those children who were positive, we did contact tracing; we went to the homes of those children to do testing as well,” the REO informed the council.
For cases uncovered at those homes, persons were advised to remain at home. Across at the schools, general sanitisation was done while school was closed for several days.
Details of the first set of cases were made public in early June. To date, the REO explained that, “for the past couple of days, going into weeks, we’ve had no positive cases reported of COVID throughout the region.”
The cases were detected along the Corentyne Coast. Except for three schools where the virus was detected among students, no other institution has reported any instance of the virus. Nonetheless, many individuals in New Amsterdam have been seen wearing face masks.
Institutions like the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court have enforced COVID-19 protocols. At the very least, entrance into the facility without a face mask is denied.
While assuring that the situation is not a crisis, the REO cautioned that things are not yet in the clear. He indicated that measures implemented have had positive results in mitigating cases.
