(Kaieteur News) – Demerara Bank Limited says this year’s International Building Expo reaffirmed a growing trend among young Guyanese: a determination to own homes earlier and build long-term financial security instead of renting.

Over the four-day exhibition, the bank in a press release said it engaged hundreds of visitors who sought more than just information on interest rates and loan packages. Many, the bank said shared aspirations of owning their first homes, including young professionals, newly married couples, parents seeking larger living spaces, and entrepreneurs looking to create a better future for their families.

One of the most encouraging developments, according to the bank, was that a significant number of home loan applications came from persons under the age of 30.

The bank said this reflects a shift in mindset among the country’s younger generation, with many choosing to invest in homeownership at the start of their careers as a means of building wealth and long-term stability.

The expo also showcased the bank’s continued investment in modernising its services. Demerara Bank said customers increasingly expect fast, convenient and hassle-free banking, prompting it to streamline its home loan process through digital solutions and improved internal systems.

Those improvements delivered tangible results during the Expo, where the bank approved more than $1 billion in loan facilities and over $36 million in visa credit card facilities.

According to the bank, the approvals were processed without long lines, excessive paperwork or lengthy delays, demonstrating how technology can simplify banking while allowing customers to spend less time waiting and more time focusing on their families, businesses and personal goals.

Chief Executive Officer, Dowlat Parbhu, said every loan application represents a significant milestone in someone’s life.

“Every application represents a person who has placed their trust in us at one of the most important moments in their life. We never lose sight of that responsibility. Our role is not simply to approve loans; it is to help people move forward. When we make banking easier, we make life a little easier too, and that is what continues to drive our investment in innovation and customer service,” Parbhu said.

The bank also reported strong customer interest in its wider suite of digital services, including digital banking, visa credit cards, flopay merchant services, Ria Money Transfer and new account openings.

According to Demerara Bank, customers increasingly expect to access financial services securely and conveniently beyond traditional banking hours, with banking solutions available wherever they are.

The bank described the strong response from younger customers as one of the expo’s most positive outcomes.

“Watching so many young Guyanese take the first step towards owning a home gives us tremendous confidence in the future of our country. While surpassing $1 billion in loan approvals marked a significant achievement, Demerara Bank maintained that its greatest success will be measured by the families moving into their first homes, young professionals building equity instead of paying rent, and customers benefiting from faster, simpler and more accessible banking services.
