Family of Corentyne teen says locked out from post-mortem
(Kaieteur News) – The family of 16-year-old Altaf King says its search for answers has been dealt another painful setback after they were allegedly prevented from witnessing the post-mortem examination on the teenager’s body.
The autopsy was performed on Monday by Government Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan at the old Skeldon Hospital, four days after the Corentyne teen died during a police pursuit that has sparked widespread public outrage.

Speaking with Kaieteur News, Altaf’s stepfather, Rakesh Sahadew, said he, the teen’s biological father, Andra King, and his uncle, Vasdeo Megnauth, attended the hospital expecting to observe the procedure.
According to Sahadew, Altaf’s father was allowed to identify his son’s body before the examination began, but moments later, family members were ordered to leave the room.
“They said they don’t want nobody, no family member, to stand up and watch what going on. Just the police. Somebody is supposed to stand up and watch what going on when them cutting, but them ain’t want that,” Sahadew alleged.
The family said they were given no explanation for the decision. They said under normal circumstances, at least one relative is permitted to witness a post-mortem examination alongside police officers. Being denied that opportunity, they said, has only deepened their suspicions, particularly given the allegations surrounding the teenager’s death.
“We were denied in watching the post-mortem. They said they just want us to identify the body, but we’re supposed to watch what going on. They didn’t allow we to do that,” Altaf’s father said.
King believes the family’s exclusion has only intensified their grief and fueled concerns of a possible cover-up.
“If was a normal story, like normal people that die, yuh does go there and witness. All because is a police story, they stop we from witnessing it,” he said.
The family has since indicated that it is consulting attorneys and is prepared to pursue legal action if it is dissatisfied with the outcome of the investigation into the teen’s death.
Altaf, of Eliza Mary Race Course, Corentyne, died on Thursday evening following a high-speed chase involving a police patrol vehicle. Police have maintained that the teenager crashed into a utility pole while attempting to evade officers. However, eyewitnesses have disputed that account, alleging that the police vehicle struck the motorcycle, causing the fatal injuries.
Graphic videos circulated on social media showed the teenager lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries. The post-mortem examination concluded that he died from multiple injuries.
