Four sides chase first Elite League points tonight

(Kaieteur News) – Four teams still searching for their first points of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League season will take centre stage tonight when action continues with an intriguing double-header at the National Training Centre, Providence.
With all four sides having suffered defeats in their respective outings so far, tonight’s fixtures carry added significance as Fruta Conquerors face Ann’s Grove United from 6:30 pm, before league newcomers Camptown FC lock horns with the experienced Western Tigers.
Camptown FC will be looking to bounce back in their second match in the Elite League.
With three valuable points on the line in each encounter, at least two of the four clubs will have an opportunity to finally get their campaign moving in Guyana’s top-tier football competition.
The opening clash between Fruta Conquerors and Ann’s Grove promises to be a particularly important contest for both sides.
It will be Fruta Conquerors’ third outing of the season, and the Tucville-based side will be desperate to reverse their early fortunes after suffering consecutive 2-1 defeats against Den Amstel and Guyana Police Force FC.
Despite showing enough competitiveness to remain in both contests, Conquerors have yet to convert their performances into points and will be targeting a more clinical display in front of goal.
Yohance Francis will look to find the goal again for Ann’s Grove.
Ann’s Grove United, meanwhile, will enter the contest looking to respond after opening their season with a 2-1 defeat to Santos.
The East Coast Demerara side showed enough in that encounter to suggest they can be competitive, but tonight presents another opportunity to turn promise into points.
The nightcap will see Camptown FC attempting to bounce back from a difficult introduction to life in the Elite League when they face a Western Tigers side with plenty of experience at this level.
Camptown entered the League with momentum after being crowned Georgetown Football Association champions and following that success by winning the GFF Play-Off tournament.
However, their first outing in the country’s premier league served as a sharp reminder of the demands of top-flight football, as the newcomers were swept aside 4-0 by defending champions Slingerz FC.
They will now be eager to show that the opening-day result was merely a difficult first step in their transition to the Elite League.
Western Tigers will also have plenty to prove after falling 1-0 to Guyana Defence Force FC in their opening match.
In a competitive, back-and-forth encounter, the Tigers appeared set to secure a point before Colin Nelson converted a 90th-minute penalty to hand the former champions victory and leave Western Tigers empty-handed.
Tonight, however, presents a fresh opportunity.
