23 contractors vie for $521M Supenaam Stelling Upgrade Contract

(Kaieteur News) – A major infrastructure push is underway in Region Two, as 23 contractors have submitted bids to execute the planned northern extension and general upgrade of the Supenaam Ferry Stelling — a project estimated to cost just over $521 million.

According to information from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), the project falls under the Ministry of Public Works and carries an estimated price tag of $521,030,974.

The 23 contractors and their respective bids are as follows:

The lowest bid was submitted by LongReach Investments & Construction Inc. at $335,078,529 — nearly $186 million below the project estimate — while Urban Edge Builders Inc. submitted the highest bid at $589,524,161, exceeding the estimate by approximately $68 million.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, made the case for the investment earlier this year during the consideration of the 2026 budget estimates, painting a picture of a facility straining under the weight of its own success.

“Supenaam is becoming a hot spot and the people of Essequibo are very pleased with the level of connectivity being enjoyed, however, the facilities are aging and need upgrading,” Minister Edghill stated.

He outlined the scope of the planned works, which include repairing the catwalk and expanding the northern section of the ferry docking terminal, in addition to a comprehensive general upgrade of the facility.

“We have to get the catwalk fixed…We want to expand the northern section of the ferry docking terminal and the general upgrade at Supenaam,” the Minister said.

The project forms part of a broader government commitment to river transport infrastructure. In the 2026 national budget, the government allocated a substantial $11.2 billion for river transport — a clear signal of its intent to modernise and expand Guyana’s waterway connectivity as the country’s economy continues its rapid expansion.
