UG names transitional leadership team as Vice-Chancellor’s term ends
(Kaieteur News) – The University of Guyana (UG) on Friday announced that Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin’s seven-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor came to an end on July 31, 2026, prompting the University’s Council to install a Transitional Management Team to keep the institution running smoothly while a permanent successor is chosen.

Chancellor and Chair of Council Sir Ronald Sanders thanked Professor Mohamed-Martin for her time in the role, saying the Council “thanks Professor Mohamed-Martin for her seven years of stewardship of the University of Guyana and wishes her every success in her future endeavours.”
To maintain continuity across the university’s academic, administrative and financial operations, the Council has appointed a three-person team to oversee daily affairs until a new Vice-Chancellor takes office.
Leading the team is Professor Stafford Griffith, a professor at the University of Guyana and Professor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies. Griffith brings decades of Caribbean higher-education leadership experience, having previously served as Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI’s Five Islands Campus, Regional Director of its Office for Online Learning, Director of its School of Education, and Deputy Dean of the Mona Campus. He has also held senior posts with the Caribbean Examinations Council and sat on numerous national and regional boards.

Alongside him is Dr. Diana Devika Gobin, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration. With more than eighteen years in higher education, including a stint as Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Gobin has been central to the university’s financial management, academic planning and governance. She holds a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation, an International MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and a Bachelor of Social Science in Management.

The team’s third seat will go to the incoming Chair of the Committee of Deans, whose election is expected next week.
The university said its international search for a permanent Vice-Chancellor is in its final stages, with four shortlisted candidates now before the Council for consideration.
Sir Ronald Sanders emphasised that the arrangement is designed to keep the university on steady footing while that search concludes. “The Council is committed to ensuring a smooth and orderly transition in the leadership of the University while maintaining continuity in its academic mission, governance and administration,” he said.
“I have every confidence that Professor Griffith, Dr. Gobin and the incoming Chair of the Committee of Deans will provide the steady and experienced leadership necessary during this interim period. At the same time, the Council remains fully engaged in completing the search for the University’s next Vice-Chancellor through a rigorous and transparent process,” Sanders stated.
The Transitional Management Team will operate under the oversight of the Chancellor and the University Council until a new Vice-Chancellor is formally appointed.
