Butcher dies, teen injured in Corentyne motorcycle smash up
(Kaieteur News) – A well-known butcher of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice lost his life in a fatal accident at Black Bush Polder.
The accident occurred on Wednesday evening on the Mibicuri Public Road, Black Bush Polder, claiming the life of 27-year-old Jermaine Junior Smartt and leaving 14-year-old Swanti Culpepper, hospitalised.
Based on preliminary investigations, Smartt was riding his motorcycle # CP 1482, heading west along the road, while Culpepper, of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, was proceeding east on his motorcycle, which, according to police reports, was without a functioning headlamp at the time.
The two motorcycles subsequently collided, causing both riders to fall onto the roadway. Both received serious injuries about their bodies, and were unconscious by the time they were picked up by public-spirited citizens. They were promptly taken to the nearby Mibicuri Public Hospital. While there, Smartt succumbed to his injuries as he was receiving treatment. His body is currently at the Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Speaking on Thursday at her home in Rose Hall, Bridget Ann Moore, the mother of the deceased, told this publication that just after 18:00 hrs on Wednesday, she had three phone calls in rapid succession, pertaining to her son, the sixth of nine children.
“The person call me and ask me for he. I said he gone Black Bush. She said if I know he meet up in accident, I said no, then she credit done. My daughter call me now and said ‘mommy, way side yuh deh?’ I seh I deh home. She seh ‘yuh know Jermaine reach up in accident and dead?’ and she start cry and she cut off,” Moore said.
The third call would be from a friend of hers, from the Mibicuri area where the accident happened. The friend confirmed too that Smartt was involved in an accident, and advised that she take a car and travel to the Mibicuri Hospital urgently.
They arrived at the hospital just about 19:00, and a doctor called them into a room to break the news to them.
“The doctor asked me if I’m strong to see my son, I said yes. He said ‘alright, I gon’ carry y’all and show y’all’. He carry us in a room now, I see my son wrap up on the trolley, and I start holler,” the grieving mother related.

According to information gathered, Moore said the teen was riding a “naked skin bike” without any lights on or functioning breaks. They said that the young biker dashed onto the path of Smartt and caused the collision.
Moore told Kaieteur News that she last saw her son on Wednesday midday, after he had wrapped up his butchery business for the day and was preparing to leave. Her son had operated a meat stall at the front of her home. Their final interaction, she said, was via a call shortly before the incident.
“When I call him about six something, he asked me ‘wuh happen?’ and I told him them children (nieces) behaving bad. He said he is in Black Bush, said he’s coming, and that was it.”
A friend of the family added, “I feel really sorry about what happened to him,” having spoke to him only Wednesday morning before receiving word of the tragedy later on in the day.
Meanwhile, Culpepper, a student of Mibicuri Secondary School, regained consciousness a while after, and was examined by a doctor on duty, after which he was transferred to the No. 75 Village Public Hospital, where he received treatment in the emergency unit.
His condition is listed as serious.
Police stated that a motorcycle was lodged at the Mibicuri Police Station for examination, but checks made for other motorcycles were unsuccessful. Investigations are continuing.
