(Kaieteur News) – A third school in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) has confirmed COVID-19 infections within just over a week, heightening concerns about a possible outbreak along the Corentyne corridor.
Information reaching Kaieteur News on Sunday revealed that more than 10 students of the Lower Corentyne Secondary School (LCSS) in Rose Hall Town have tested positive for the virus.
School officials said the first case was detected on Friday. By Sunday, additional students had tested positive, prompting the institution to notify the Region Six Department of Education.
As a precautionary measure, school activities have been temporarily suspended to facilitate fumigation and sanitissation of the compound.
The Ministry of Education has reportedly advised parents, teachers and students to take the necessary precautions, including the wearing of face masks, as efforts intensify to contain the spread of the virus.
Teachers are expected to meet on Monday to discuss the implementation of COVID-19 protocols and guidelines ahead of the resumption of classes.
One teacher expressed concern that the number of infections could be significantly higher, alleging that some parents are withholding information about their children’s health status.
“The parents are not honest as it relates to the COVID situation. They are hiding it. The school needs to know that these children are sick, that they have COVID, because we need to make sure that other students are tested,” the teacher told Kaieteur News.
The latest cases come on the heels of infections reported at the GuySuCo Training College in Port Mourant and, more recently, the Port Mourant Primary School.
With three schools now affected within days, anxiety is growing among parents and educators across the Corentyne. Fortunately, none of the infected students are critically ill, with all reported cases said to be asymptomatic.
Despite the emerging situation, attempts by Kaieteur News to obtain comment from senior regional health officials on measures being implemented to contain the spread have so far proven unsuccessful, with calls unanswered and messages receiving no response.
