(Kaieteur News) – The 23-year-old man who was charged with the murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed is likely to face additional charges for allegedly injuring 72-year-old Haliman Itwari on June 5 at her Phase 3 Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
Deputy Commissioner of Police and Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum made the disclosure to reporters on Thursday on the sideline of an event held at the Police Officers’ Mess.
Blanhum said the elderly woman is still hospitalised and when she recovers the police will interview her and thereafter prepare a case file that will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, for legal advice.
“The grandmother is still hospitalised, and as soon as she recovers, the police will ensure we interview her and on completion, we will prepare the case file, send to the DPP for her legal opinion, and most definitely we will institute charge or charges based on DPP’s recommendation,” he explained.
The Crime Chief opted not to divulge the likely charges but said, “What I can tell you is that the perpetrator committed a very gruesome and despicable act. I do not want to divulge certain information pertaining to the act committed by the perpetrator apart from what I revealed to the media before.”
Twenty-three-year-old Shaheed Mohamed was arrested on Saturday, June 6, 2026 for Mohamed’s murder and the attempted murder of the elderly woman. He reportedly confessed to the crime and according to investigators, his confession was driven by a trail of digital evidence that placed him squarely at the scene.
On Tuesday, the suspect was charged with the murder of the seven-year-old child and remanded to prison.
The 72-year-old woman, remains a patient at the De Kinderen Regional Hospital. Her son, Naseeb Mohamed, briefly told Kaieteur News that her condition has improved and she will be discharged soon.
“She is doing much better. Physically my mom is okay but mentally she is not. She is very traumatised and she is still in the hospital,” he said.
The deadly home invasion occurred around 04:45 hrs. on June 5, 2026 when the child and his great-grandmother were alone. Around 05:05 hrs., a relative arrived at the home and made the horrifying discovery — Itwari injured and young Adriel dead. The elderly woman was rushed to De Kinderen Regional Hospital. A post mortem conducted on Monday confirmed the boy died from an incised wound to the neck, compounded by blunt force injuries.
