(Kaieteur News) – Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips said containers of humanitarian relief supplies destined for earthquake-stricken Venezuela, are currently being prepared.
The prime minister who was joined by private sector representative Mr. Komal Singh and Director-General of the Civil Defence Commission, Colonel Nazrul Hussain on Wednesday visited the John Fernandes Limited Container Terminal, where they observed the packing of several containers.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips on Wednesday overseeing the preparations of humanitarian relief supplies destined for Venezuela, who was affected by recent earthquakes.
The prime minister on his Facebook page, said the ongoing exercise forms part of Guyana’s national response to support communities affected by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. The containers are being packed with essential items, including rice, in a manner intended to support efficient distribution upon arrival.
“What is happening now is that we are packing these containers. In this instance, they are being packed with rice and packaged in such a way that, upon arrival, the supplies will be easy to distribute,” the PM said.
On Wednesday, he and his team also visited the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) facility on Woolford Avenue, where relief supplies are being received, sorted and prepared as part of Guyana’s coordinated humanitarian response.
The visit comes as preparations continue for the expected departure of a relief vessel on Friday, 3rd July, 2026.
The PM said he interacted with 18 volunteers from Saraswati Vidya Niketan, led by Geography Teacher Ms. Tiffini Thomas, who also represented the Ministry of Health’s Climate Change and Environmental Health programme, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and CDC staff who are all assisting in the relief exercise.
President Irfaan Ali on Saturday announced that a vessel, capable of transporting 8,000 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, is expected to depart Guyana this Friday.
The president, during a social media address, outlined Guyana’s coordinated humanitarian operation and regional mobilisation effort following the devastating earthquakes.
The president said the vessel’s large carrying capacity has allowed Guyana to expand the operation beyond national support to include contributions from across CARICOM.
“We’ve extended the operation to include CARICOM support,” President Ali said, noting that relief supplies from regional partners are expected to arrive in the coming days before the shipment departs.
Guyana’s assistance package will prioritise pharmaceutical support, medical supplies, food for children and families, sanitation items, recovery equipment and essential humanitarian aid.
Expressing concern for those affected, President Ali said the country’s response is centred on helping vulnerable groups, especially children, women, the elderly and families displaced by the disaster.
