(Kaieteur News) – Guyana made history on Tuesday by successfully completing the world longest tele-robotic surgery.
Tele-robotic surgery or telesurgery as it is more commonly known enables surgeons to operate on patients from a different location using robotic systems, high-speed 5G/fiber optic networks, and 3D visualisation.
Speaking at a press-conference on Tuesday in the presidential suite at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara, President Irfaan Ali revealed that coronary artery bypass graft telesurgery was conducted around 06:00 AM in Guyana on Independence Day.

The telesurgery was performed by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava alongside a team of local doctors on a patient in India using the SSI Mantra Robotic systems. The SSI Mantra systems which will now be re-named Mantra Freedom 60 in honour of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary, was procured from an Indian company founded by Dr. Srivastava called SS Innovations International Inc.
Tuesday’s surgical procedure using the Mantra Freedom 60, according to President Ali, covered an approximated 20,000 kilometers from India to Guyana making it the longest telesurgery in the world to date.
The coronary artery bypass graft telesurgery was not the only one performed on Independence Day, the President revealed. More Tele-robotic surgeries were done throughout the day.
One of them was a hernia repair on a patient in India carried by local doctors trained in India to perform robotic surgeries.
“The procedure in India was supported onsite by Dr. Lalit Malik and Dr. Mohit Bandari”, Ali told the press.
Dr. Hemraj Ramcharran spoke of the experience at the press conference.
He said everyone was nervous when it was surgery time.
“We were mentored by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava who was excellent in Guiding us”, he related.
Meanwhile, President Ali spoke of extending the services to the Caribbean, as Guyana is now positioned as a regional hub for robotic surgeries.
“We have leaped to 2050 and beyond”, President Ali said while describing Guyana’s robotic systems as the latest and most advanced technology of its kind.
