Edinburgh Primary School in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) where the incident reportedly occurred
(Kaieteur News) – Relatives of an 11-year-old boy who was allegedly assaulted at the Edinburgh Primary School, East Bank Berbice, have expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of a meeting held with Region Six education officials and the parents of the two boys accused of attacking him.
The meeting, convened by the Department of Education, followed an alleged violent altercation involving three pupils after the first day of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) on April 29.
The two boys accused of carrying out the assault were each handed a three-day suspension from school following the discussions, which were held within the compound of Edinburgh Primary School.
However, family members of the victim said the punishment was ineffective, noting that the pupils have already completed their NGSA examinations and are preparing to leave the institution.
“What they gon do? School is out. It doesn’t make sense, because they can be home. They get suspended, that isn’t anything really,” the child’s grandmother, Geetwattie Maywahlall, told this publication.
Regional Education Officer Satish Udit confirmed that the meeting involved the victim, his grandmother and aunt, the two accused pupils and their parents, the school’s headmistress, teachers, and two welfare officers from the department of education.
Udit said all parties were given a fair opportunity to be heard during the engagement.
The family had previously stated that the child was left traumatised following the incident and was reluctant to return for the second day of the NGSA examinations.
They also criticised the manner in which school officials initially handled the matter, saying they expected stronger action that would reinforce zero tolerance for bullying and violence in schools.
“I’m not looking for money, I ain’t asking for them get bad treatment, I’m not looking for anything. These children have to learn about bullying,” Maywahlall said.
