(Kaieteur News) – A man pretending to be interested in the purchase of a car quickly showed his true colours while test driving a Honda Vezel at a housing scheme aback Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The fake buyer, while test driving the vehicle with the owner, stopped the car along a lonely road in a housing scheme that is now being developed and tried to stab him in a bid to escape with the vehicle.
The owner of the car fought the thief and sustained a cut to one of his fingers before the knife broke. During the scuffle, the owner of the car managed to unlock the front passenger door and fell out of the car.
The traumatised man recalled asking the thief, “this is what you bring me here for? to kill me for a car?” The thief responded, “I deh in the pressure”, before snatching the keys from the owner and speeding off with the vehicle.
The owner was later rescued and taken to a police station where he reported the theft.
During a brief interview with Kaieteur News on Saturday, the owner disclosed that he had advertised the vehicle for sale on the Facebook Market Place. The thief contacted him to purchase the vehicle under the pretense that he is an ExxonMobil employee and a contractor by the name of Nathan.
The man claimed that he works six months offshore and spends the other six months home where he builds houses for people. He said he wanted to examine the vehicle and take it or a test drive before purchasing it and arranged to meet the owner.
“I said Saturday but after he deh pon me, deh pon me, we settle for Friday”, the owner recalled.
The two had initially agreed to meet at the old “harbour bridge” but then the thief changed the location to Eccles, EBD.
The owner said he drove to Eccles where he picked up the man and took him to another location in Eccles where he (the thief) could check the vehicle properly. After checking the vehicle’s engine, the thief requested the test drive. The owner agreed and the man, who was professionally clad was allowed to the car.
The fake buyer then drove to Diamond but instead of leaving the area and returning to their meeting point, he drove to the new housing scheme.
The owner said he asked the man where he was taking him to which he reportedly responded, “I taking you to show you them house that I building.”
“The man even show me lil cement pon he hand so I believe he,” the car owner told Kaieteur News.
Persons with information that may lead to the location of the car or the thief can contact the nearest police station or Kaieteur News.
