(Kaieteur News) – A 14-year-old student of the Tuschen Secondary School is in policy custody after he stabbed two 15-year-old students of the same school on Thursday.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the “unlawful wounding” occurred at about 10:10h. “Enquiries disclosed that the victims and the suspect, a 14-year-old student of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, are known to each other, having attended the same school.
It is alleged that, on the date and time mentioned, the victims were standing together during their break time in the school compound when they observed two female students engaged in a scuffle. As such, the victims attempted to intervene, but were threatened by the suspect. The victims then left the scene and decided to inform the Head Teacher, during which they were allegedly threatened again by the suspect,” police said.
Police reported that a scuffle ensured between one of the victims and the suspect during which the victim received wounds to his left hand and upper chest area from the suspect, who was armed with a sharp object.
“The other victim then intervened and also received wounds to his right hand,” police said,

Minister of Education Sonia Parag during a visit to the two injured students of the Tuschen Secondary School.
Reports are that several teachers at the school intervened and apprehended the suspect, while the injured students were taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where they were examined by doctors on duty, found to be in a stable condition and subsequently discharged.
“The suspect was subsequently contacted by police, told of the allegation made against him and arrested in accordance with the procedures applicable to juveniles. He was then escorted to the Tuschen Police Station, where he was placed in custody,” police said while noting that law enforcement officers from Regional Division Three are investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education Sonia Parag in a statement Thursday said that the Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into the incident that left the two students injured.
“The student perpetrator is facing expulsion from the school and was taken into police custody, while a teacher allegedly involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a thorough police investigation,” the minister said.
Minister Parag and other officials visited the injured boys and their families at the hospital.
“In addition to the police and education investigations, the Childcare and Protection Agency of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has been informed to ensure the welfare of all parties is addressed,” the minister said.
The Ministry of Education said it remains “firmly committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and teachers, and continues to follow established standard operating procedures to maintain a secure and conducive learning environment for everyone.”
