(Kaieteur News) – U-Mobile (Cellular) Inc. trading as Digicel Guyana has disclosed that significant sums will be expended in a modernisation plan directed towards expansion of its fibre optic network in areas along the East Bank and East Coast Demerara, Berbice and Linden.
The telecommunications company recently met with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) at its office at Lot 106 New Garden Street, Queenstown. Representing Digicel were Chief External Affairs Officer Ana Rua, Chief Business Officer Liam Donnelly and Chief Executive Officer of Digicel Guyana and Suriname Deonarine Gopaul, while the PUC’s delegation included Chairman Dr. Nanda Gopaul, along with technical and administrative staff.
According to a statement from the PUC, the meeting provided an opportunity for discussion on matters relating to telecommunications service delivery and continued development of the telecommunications sector in Guyana.
During the engagement, Digicel outlined its plans to invest in network expansion and infrastructure improvements to support increasing demand, improve service quality and strengthen overall network capacity. The company also indicated its intention to modernise its network, subject to the requisite regulatory approvals.
“Digicel is also investing heavily in their mobile network to keep up with growing demand for data. Additionally, discussions addressed operational challenges encountered during infrastructure deployment and maintenance,” the statement shared. The PUC said it welcomed the update and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive
dialogue with service providers to support sector development and ensure that consumers receive reliable and efficient services.
