(Kaieteur News) – The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) on Wednesday reminded that parking on pavements across the city is “strictly prohibited” pointing to pedestrian safety as a concern.
In a notice on the municipality’s Facebook page, the Council said pavements are designated for pedestrians, including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, and should not be obstructed by vehicles, warning that such practices force pedestrians onto busy roadways.
The council also cited the Municipal and District Councils Act Chapter 28:01, specifically Sections 9 and 10, which make it unlawful to drive, ride, or place vehicles and other objects on pavements and footpaths. It urged citizens to comply with the law and park responsibly in ways that ensure safety for all road users.
However, the announcement has triggered criticism on social media, with several residents questioning the consistency of enforcement. “All I see is vending happening on pave,” one commenter wrote under the M&CC’s post, pointing to what they described as widespread obstruction of pedestrian spaces beyond just parked vehicles.
Another commenter highlighted a specific concern in the Kitty area, noting that “straight up the road from where the council meets, there’s Bounty Supermarket which has seemingly commandeered the pavement for customer parking… on one of the busier streets… where many primary school children walk in the morning and afternoon, yet no action has been taken.”
Persons also raised concerns of uneven enforcement with one commenter claiming that when they raised concerns with a police officer about store owners blocking parking areas with pallets, they were dismissed. “You have selective enforcement… maybe the council could enlighten me?” the individual said.
Others questioned what action citizens should take when they observe violations in central areas. “So when we see the vehicles on the pavement on Church Street… and on Middle Street what do we do?” one person asked, while another pointed to alleged infractions along Charlotte and Cummings streets.
Some residents called for stronger enforcement mechanisms, including towing. “Invest in a couple of tow trucks and charge fees to reclaim them,” one comment read. Further, one user referenced previous efforts to remove vendors and clear parapets, claiming those initiatives were not sustained. “This notice too will be for nothing,” the commenter said, urging authorities to take decisive action rather than issue repeated warnings. Another added: “Stop talking and enforce these rules. Action speaks louder than words.”
