Streetlight fault triggers 2½-hour Covent Garden power outage
(Kaieteur News) – Residents of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, experienced a unscheduled power interruption on Monday after a streetlight came into contact with the electricity network, prompting emergency works by the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL).
According to GPL, the issue was caused by an object touching the network. An image shared by the company showed that the top portion of a streetlight was involved.
In an advisory posted on its Facebook page, GPL stated: “Dear Customers, please be advised that Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) will be conducting emergency works at Covent Garden to remove a threat that is coming into contact with the network.”
As a result, customers were advised to prepare for an interruption in electricity service from approximately 14:30 hrs to 17:00 hrs while the necessary repairs were carried out.
GPL acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the unscheduled outage but stressed that the work was essential to maintaining the safety, reliability, and integrity of the electricity network. The company also apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience and understanding.
The latest outage adds to a series of recent service interruptions linked to objects or equipment coming into contact with the network, as well as other technical issues.
On 19th June, this publication reported that a transformer leak resulted in a five-hour power outage in Mabaruma.
In an emergency notice, the Mabaruma Power and Light Incorporated (MPL) said: “A severe leak has been found on the main take-off transformer. To safely perform urgent repairs and protect the town’s power supply, the entire electrical grid will be shut down today between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM.”
MPL further noted that its crews were on site working to complete the repairs and restore power as quickly as possible. The company also apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience.
