Kingston Secondary School set for major rebuild
(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education has moved to rebuild Kingston Secondary School in Georgetown, issuing a tender for the construction of a new building.
According to a tender notice issued by the ministry, no engineer’s estimate was listed, however, the project will form part of the $100 billion approved for the Ministry of Education in 2026 National Budget. Out of the $100.2 billion, $34.9 billion has been allocated for secondary education this year.

The education ministry has been building new schools across the country to ensure children have access to education. The ministry has also been rehabilitating and rebuilding new nursery and primary schools to address overcrowding, and provide an improved and enhanced learning space for students and teachers.
During the presentation of this year’s budget, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh said over the last five years, more than 100 new schools were constructed or rehabilitated countrywide.
“In 2026, a total of $24.3 billion is earmarked for the completion of more than 40 schools, including Falls Top and Kanapang nursery schools, Cracrana and Diamond No. 2 Primary Schools, as well as Karaudarnau and Kwebanna Secondary schools, alongside the continuous rehabilitation and maintenance of existing schools. Works will also advance on student dormitories at Jawalla, North West, Port Kaituma, Santa Rosa and Waramadong,” he disclosed.
At a recent commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag said with the commissioning of some 18 new secondary schools this year, the country is on track to achieving universal secondary access to education.
In addition to the Kingston Secondary School, the ministry is also seeking bids for the construction of laboratories at the new Micobie Secondary School in Region Eight, reconstruction of Agricola PIC, reconstruction of roof to the administrative building of Upper Corentyne Technical Institute, and floor construction at the Essequibo Technical Institute.
