(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has renewed three mining permits for Canadian company, Gold Port Corporation for its Groete Gold Copper Project.
The company announced on Thursday that the permits, covering a combined 1,384 hectares (approximately 3,400 acres), have been renewed for the ensuing year. Gold Port is the 100% owner of the Groete Gold Project, which is located about 10 kilometres west of the Essequibo River.
Gold Port also disclosed that the camp facility at the Groete Creek Gold Copper Project is undergoing reconstruction. Buildings are being rebuilt and resupplied with new equipment, including power generation, refrigeration and food preparation systems, while all heavy equipment on site has been repaired and serviced.
According to the company, the ongoing programme is aimed at preparing the site for the construction of a road to the Manaka access point, located roughly eight miles north of the project area. A new Multi-Power diamond core rig is also being commissioned ahead of its transport to the camp once the road is completed.
Amid rising gold prices, Gold Port said renewed interest in the project was driven by the upward trend in the market. Gold Port had completed a review of the project in light of sustained high gold prices. In 2024, the company’s permits were renewed for by the Government of Guyana through the GGMC. During this period, “the company has the option to develop the project and convert the mining permits into a mining licence. The project is strategically located 64 kilometers west-southwest of Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, and 11 kilometers west of the Essequibo River, a major transportation route in the country.”
The Groete Project hosts an inferred mineral resource estimate of 1.57 million gold-copper equivalent ounces, contained in 74 million tonnes at a grade of 0.66 grams per tonne gold equivalent, based on a 2019 report.
The project has a long exploration history dating back to the 1960s, when initial drilling was conducted by the United Nations, followed by further work in the 1990s by Coeur d’Alene Mines Ltd. Exploration activities were last carried out in 2012, including a drilling programme that supported the current resource estimate. “The project has emerged as one of Guyana’s largest gold copper zones, and the only deposit with deep water access,” the company notes.
In October 2025, the company had previously identified and announced it selected Jaisingh’s Equipment Rental (JER) of Georgetown Guyana for the construction of road access to its Groete Gold Copper Project.
The contract was for the completion of approximately 13 kilometers of dirt road access including some bridge and drainage construction. However, in a February 2026 statement, Gold Port said that after several attempts and additional issues with the project, it decided to pivot and purchase heavy equipment and complete the road development with existing staff. Company President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adrian F. C. Hobkirk said: “After consideration of existing proposals and ongoing issues with the previously announced construction, management determined the most cost and time-effective approach is to conclude an equipment purchase and have the Company complete the access road. The new heavy support equipment will be vital to the successful completion of the upcoming drill programme.”
This publication has reported that Guyana’s mineral wealth continues to attract significant foreign investment, with Gold Port being one of several Canadian mining companies collectively controlling millions of ounces of gold across various stages of development. These projects, spanning multiple mining regions, are advancing through exploration, feasibility studies, and permitting.
