The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has strongly urged all businesses in Georgetown to adhere to proper garbage disposal methods.
(Kaieteur News) – “The GCCI strongly condemns individuals who participate in littering…the onus is on the Mayor and City Council to monitor these activities and to enforce our laws against these practices.”
This was the firm stance taken by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) in response to a question by KN regarding reports that businesses along the Regent Street commercial hub have been engaging in improper waste disposal. The allegations suggest that some proprietors have been seen or photographed by Waste Management Director Walter Narine during his outreaches paying homeless individuals to dump refuse directly onto the streets. Efforts to contact Mayor Alfred Mentore for a comment proved futile.
The Chamber’s statement shifts the spotlight toward the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), suggesting that while the private sector can advocate for change, only the municipality has the power to penalize offenders. Despite the allegations involving the business community, the GCCI maintained that it remains dedicated to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The organization noted that it has “continuously conducted activities and engagements geared towards ensuring that our members engage in responsible business practices, including proper garbage disposal.”
To combat the city’s persistent sanitation issues, the Chamber highlighted several ongoing efforts aimed at member education and community service for example hosting webinars focused on recycling techniques and modern waste management strategies. As well as mobilizing members to participate in frequent clean-up campaigns across the capital.
Regent Street has long struggled with waste accumulation, a problem exacerbated by high foot traffic and heavy commercial activity. The report of businesses utilizing the city’s vulnerable population to bypass official disposal methods has over the years sparked concerns regarding public health and the aesthetics of the “Garden City.”
