(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill recently disclosed that the government is in the final stages of negotiation for the award and signing of contract for the new Berbice River Bridge.
According to an article by the Department of Public Information, Minister Edghill was at a consultation with residents on Tuesday in Region Six when he provided the update.
“The negotiations for the award and signing of the contract for the new four-lane high-span concrete bridge to Berbice is being finalised right now,” he was quoted by DPI.
Back in 2024, the public works ministry sought expressions of interest (EOIs) for the design, building and financing of the new Berbice River Bridge.
In October 2024 nine contractors-all international companies, submitted expressions of interest. Of the nine, five were invited to further bid for the project.
According to tender openings in March 2025, the five bidders were China Railway Construction Caribbean Company Limited, China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group Co. Limited (Joint Venture) – US $255,872,559.08; AJM Enterprise, Shandong High-Speed Road & Bridge Company Limited (Joint Venture) – US$279,686,679.56; China Road & Bridge Corporation – US $205,888,712; China Railway First Group Company Limited, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Limited (Joint Venture) – US$266,432,183; and Vishwa Samooja Private Limited – US $465,510,780.
DPI reported in November 2025, that a contractor was identified and that the government was negotiating the contract.
In January 2024, President Irfaan Ali announced that his government intended to construct a fixed high-span crossing bridge across the Berbice River.
“We are already understanding the future needs of this region. That is why we are accelerating the plans for a fixed high-span crossing bridge across the Berbice River just like the one in the Demerara River,” President Ali said at a sod-turning event held for the US$161 million modern hospital in New Amsterdam. He had initially announced the construction of a new bridge in Berbice in October 2022.
The structure is expected to mirror the US$262 million Demerara River Bridge, which was commissioned in October 2025.
Government in its national budget this year, allocated some $12.2 billion for the construction of the Berbice Bridge as well as other major bridge projects.
