Kaieteur Sports – Guyana will be represented by a 32-member athlete delegation at this year’s South American Youth Games, scheduled for April 12–25 in Panama, as the country looks to rebound from a disappointing outing at the previous edition in Argentina in 2022, where it failed to secure a medal.
The local contingent will be supported by 12 coaches and six officials, bringing Guyana’s total representation to 50 for the multi-sport showcase, which is in its fourth edition.
The Games, first held in 2013, are designed for athletes aged 14–18 and serve as a critical developmental platform for emerging talent across the South American continent.
A press conference hosted by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) yesterday, saw athletes and officials expressing confidence and readiness to don the Golden Arrowhead with pride.
The atmosphere was one of determination, with the young delegation eager to make a strong impression on the South American stage.
Leading the charge will be the track and field team, which makes up the largest portion of the delegation with 14 athletes.
That group includes Ezekiel Millington, Dequan Farrell, Gordon Thompson, David Williams, Ade Sealy, Ebo McNeil, Angel Jeffrey, Adanya Glen, Joanna Anthon, Akeela Dover, Jaral Campbell, Keimal Gishard, Nathaniel Samaroo, and Courtney Haynes.
The athletics programme has historically been Guyana’s strongest suit, and the athletes were keen to highlight their readiness to showcase the country’s prowess against their regional counterparts.
Many of them are fresh off participation at the CARIFTA Games in Grenada, providing valuable competition exposure heading into Panama.
Supporting the track and field unit are coaches Glenton Pantlitz, Johny Gravesande, and Dillian Leitch-Crandon.
Beyond athletics, Guyana will compete in seven additional disciplines.
Chess will feature Italy Ton-Chung and Sachin Pitamber, coached by Anthony Drayton, while badminton will see Christopher Jordan and Mishka Beharry in action under the guidance of Priyanna Ramdhani and Ayana Watson.
Table tennis athletes Jasmine Billingy, Samara Sukhai, Malachi Moore, and Kayden Meusa will be coached by Linden Johnson, while archers Brandon Cummings and Ravish Singh will be led by Ryan McKinnon.
The 3×3 basketball team – Daniel Chisolm, Stephan Duke, Jaden Simon, and Kadeem Beckles – will be headed by Sileena Arjune, while tennis players Nathan DeNobrega and Paul Kalekyezi will work under Kalyca Fraser.
In boxing, Ken Harvey and Jofes Jackson will be guided by coaches Lennox Daniels and Fransciso Roldan.
Guyana’s only gold medal at the South American Youth Games remains the historic achievement of Deshanna Skeete, who topped the podium in 2017 in Peru.
The six-member official delegation includes Carolyn Garraway (Chef-de-Mission), Aretha Legall (Physiotherapist/Safeguarding Officer), GOA President, Munroe himself, Cristy Campbell (GOA Vice-President), Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon (GOA General Secretary), and Chelsea Edghill (GOA’s Athletes’ Commission Representative).
