(Kaieteur News) – An off-duty Assistant Superintendent of Police is currently under investigation by the Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), following an incident in which he allegedly behaved in a disorderly manner and threatened a civilian.
A video circulating on social media shows the officer directing obscene language and issuing threats to a civilian. In the footage, the officer is heard saying, “You know me? I will kill you. Let I see you again and you gon see what I gone do. I gon show you.” The officer was surrounded by fellow officers attempting to de-escalate the situation.
In response to the incident, the GPF stated that the matter was brought to the attention of the commissioner of police. The commissioner has directed the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement said ranks must maintain professionalism at all times. “The Guyana Police Force wishes to make it clear that professional conduct, restraint and accountability are expected of all ranks, whether on or off duty and any behaviour found to be inconsistent with the standards of the force will be addressed in accordance with the law and established disciplinary procedures,” police said.
This incident adds to ongoing concerns about police abuse of power and misconduct in Guyana. Citizens have reported instances of police violence, including recent cases involving the brutal treatment of civilians.
One such case involves the family of Steve Vyfhius, a resident of No. 9 Village, West Coast Berbice. Vyfhius, who suffers from schizophrenia, was shot by police while in custody at the Blairmont Police lockup. He sustained a shattered leg and narrowly avoided amputation. The family is calling for immediate accountability and a comprehensive investigation into what they describe as police brutality.
Additionally, another circulating video appears to show police officers beating and using a taser on a civilian, who was reportedly hospitalised after sustaining injuries. This matter is also under investigation.

When an ASP in the Guyana Police Force threatens a civilian caught on live
video, it means, HE is not part, parcel of the GPF or whatever “motto” they
have. This is where the OPR does NOT come in, as the video is evidence
enough to send this ASP packing pronto, handing over any weapons, badge,
uniform etc. I remembered the song HIT THE ROAD JACK, from the 1960’s.
Police Commissioner is just making a mountain out of a molehill, involving
the OPR, that is not needed in this particular case.
