(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh social media is a powerful thing — it give everybody a voice. Problem is, it ain’t give everybody facts.
Dem boys been scrolling de other day and nearly choke pon dem tea when dem see one big argument brewing. One fella swearing up and down that No. 63 Beach deh pon de Corentyne River. Now leh we be serious fuh a minute. If you standing pun No. 63 Beach and you looking out, you ain’t seeing no river bank — you seeing big, wide, brown Atlantic Ocean staring back at you like it wondering who fail geography.
Yes, de Corentyne River mouth deh close by — nobody arguing dat. But close to something ain’t mean it is dat thing. If that was so, then anybody living near Demerara River could claim dem living in de Atlantic Ocean and start fishing fuh whale from de verandah.
Evidence simple: No. 63 Beach is part of de Atlantic coastline. De tides, de wave action, de openness — all ocean features. A river nah behave so unless it suddenly decide fuh become a sea overnight. But wait — that wasn’t de only courtroom on Facebook. Dem boys see another heated debate: whether Burnham was a founding member of the PPP. Now this one had people typing like dem writing CXC exams with no invigilator.
Leh we settle it. Burnham was indeed a co-founder of the PPP in 1950. He even served as its first chairman. Now, some people mixing up story like cook-up rice. He was not part of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), which was the precursor. So how we reaching a stage where facts getting more debate than opinion? Dem boys seh nowadays, once yuh have data and Wi-Fi, yuh feel yuh have doctorate. Before we start talking about educating de young people, leh we first educate weself. Because passing on wrong information ain’t education. It is inheritance of confusion.
And right now, social media looking like a family passing down nuff confusion with interest.
Talk half. Leff half.
