GNBS IN FOCUS: BUILDING SAFER WORKING ENVIRONMENTS THROUGH THE ISO 45001 STANDARD

(Kaieteur News) – Achieving high levels of efficiency, quality and productivity requires a safe and healthy working environment. A strong safety culture reflects an organisation’s commitment to its employees and goes beyond the prevention of accidents, fatalities and occupational illnesses; it contributes to reduced absenteeism, improved morale and enhanced overall performance.

In recognition of Occupational Safety and Health (OH&S) Month this April, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is encouraging businesses nationwide to adopt the internationally recognised standard, the ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems – Requirements, with guidance for use. This standard offers a systematic approach to identifying hazards, managing risks, and fostering safer, more resilient workplaces for all.

The document sets out clear requirements for establishing an effective OH&S management system that protects employees and clients alike. It also places strong emphasis on leadership, requiring top management to take responsibility and ensure adequate training.

A key feature of the ISO 45001 standard is its focus on worker involvement. By encouraging consultation and active participation, organisations can develop more practical and sustainable safety practices. The standard also promotes continuous improvement through a structured cycle of planning, implementation, evaluation, and corrective action, making it relevant to organisations of all sizes and within all sectors.

The GNBS continues to play a vital role in strengthening national capacity in occupational safety and health. To assist companies looking to implement this standard, the GNBS provides both training and technical assistance. These programmes are geared at ensuring the management and employees of organisations better understand the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard and can effectively implement the requirements.

In 2025, 32 individuals completed the ISO 45001 training programme. In the first quarter of 2026, a total of 342 individuals from various organisations were trained in several training programmes. Through engaging, practical learning experiences, technical officers from the GNBS Business Development Department equipped participants with the skills needed to apply the standard effectively in their respective workplaces.

Beyond training, Technical Assistance supports companies on their journey toward certification. Achieving ISO 45001 certification demonstrates compliance with international best practices and enhances organisational credibility and reliability. This is especially valuable for businesses aiming to participate in Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil and gas sector, where adherence to stringent safety standards is critical.

Globally, workplace safety remains a significant challenge. High rates of work-related incidents, combined with increased absenteeism and decreased productivity, can adversely affect an organisation’s outcomes.

As Occupational Safety and Health Month is observed, organizations are urged to take meaningful steps to strengthen their safety systems. This year’s theme, “Good psychosocial working environments: A pathway to thriving workers and strong organizations,” aligns with the global observance of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28.
