(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Easter come and gone, but plenty people still trying to recover—not from cross buns and Easter eggs – but from the price tag that nearly crucify them before Good Friday even reach.
Is a strange thing, you know? In the “hard times”—and we had more hard times than mango season—people still used to find a way to buy a proper kite. Not them flimsy, fold-up, breeze-and-gone contraption. No sir! We talking ‘bout the good old star-point, wooden-framed, singing engine kite that does hum so sweet, you would think is a mosquito choir with a PhD.
Now? That same kite cost like it applying for a bank loan. G$6000 just so—and that is before you even talk ‘bout string and tail. By the time you finish dress up the kite, you reach G$8000. For one kite! Dem boys seh at that price, the kite shouldn’t just sing—it should pay light bill too.
Now imagine a family with three pickney. That is G$24,000 just to send them outside to fight breeze. Is no wonder plenty children end up flying them so-called “Chinese-made” kites. Cheap, yes—but them things does fly like they ‘fraid a heights. No backbone. Even the political parties step in and share out kites—but not many were the singing kind. More like “whispering engine.” The children smile, yes—but you know deep down, they woulda prefer the real thing. But preference does bow to pocket, and pocket right now feeling like empty promises.
And is not just kites, you know. Go in the market or supermarket and watch people face when the cashier call the total. Some of them spending so much just to eat, they can’t even afford a newspaper after. Imagine that! A country where information now competing with bread and sardine.
Back in the day, even man in the pit at the cinema—after watching cowboy beat up villain—still had lil change fuh buy a paper. Now? If you buy the paper, you might have to read it on an empty stomach. Dem boys seh the real “cost-of-living” ain’t just numbers—it’s when simple joys turn luxury. And while some people flying high, plenty others can’t even afford the string fuh hold on.
Talk half. Leff half.
