GPL paying the price for other’s low hanging wires
…to revisit pole sharing agreement
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc. is increasingly absorbing the cost of damages caused not by its own infrastructure, but by low-hanging wires belonging to other utility companies. Head of Executive Management, Kesh Nandlall, explained in an interview on Thursday that while some offenders are now being charged for damage to property, full cost recovery remains inconsistent. In many cases, GPL is left to shoulder the financial burden, he said.
“…all of it may not end up in like penalties, so to speak, right, wherever necessary, where damages are concerned, and we will charge them okay. We will charge the recovery cost,” he said.

There have been concerns raised on whether all the utility poles across the country belong to GPL in light of incidents where some were observed leaning or even falling over. This publication also sought to enquire if there was a fee attached to other utility companies that use GPL’s poles that may offset some expenses.
Nandall explained that while several of the telecommunications companies in Guyana do have their own poles, the low hanging wires observed, belong to them. “…sometimes they may be on our pole, or they may be on their own company installed infrastructure or pole, right and a lot of the times when a high vehicle, like a container truck or something like that, they kind of stuck on to those low hanging telecommunication wire and pull it down and it brings down the pole,” he said.
In relation to a fee, Nandlall revealed that there has always been a pole- sharing agreement in place but it has remained dormant for several reasons. He went on to say that it is something that came up and it will be looked at in discussions. “I intend to set up future meetings with all the telecommunication companies so that we can improve the relationship and the sharing agreement…” the GPL Executive assured.
