The head-on collision between a minibus and a car at Union Public Road, West Coast Demerara, which resulted in the deaths of the two brothers.
(Kaieteur News) –Two brothers lost their lives in a horrific early morning accident on Thursday along the Union Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
Dead are 21-year-old Michel Daniels of Prospect, East Bank Demerara, and his 23-year-old brother, Miguel Daniels of Moruca, Essequibo River.
The fatal accident occurred around 05:30hrs and involved three vehicles: motor car PAC 9853, driven by Miguel; minibus BWW 4493, driven by a 39-year-old man of Harlem, West Coast Demerara; and motor car PAE 4787, driven by a 23-year-old man of Providence, East Bank Demerara.
According to the Guyana Police Force, initial investigations revealed that Miguel Daniels was proceeding east along the northern side of the road at what was described as a fast rate of speed when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle. Police said that Miguel, “ended up on the southern side of the road and collided head-on with minibus BWW 4493, which was proceeding west along the southern side of the said road.”
Further, police said that motor car PAE 4787, which was travelling behind the minibus, became involved moments later. Its driver reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision but ended up striking the left rear of the minibus before veering off to the side of the road.
The impact left multiple persons injured. Michel and Miguel Daniels, along with the minibus driver, one passenger, and the driver of the third vehicle, were all rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital in both conscious and unconscious conditions.
However, the two brothers were pronounced dead on arrival.
Their bodies have since been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour, where post-mortem examinations are pending.
Police have confirmed that CCTV footage from the area has been obtained as investigations continue.
The tragic deaths have sent shockwaves through their home community of Santa Rosa, Moruca, Region One. At the time of the accident, they were reportedly preparing to travel to Lethem for the upcoming Rupununi Rodeo. A cousin of the men, Andres Atkinson described the brothers as the source of love and joy within the family. “The promise these young men had, they were meant to go a long way,” he said, visibly shaken.
“These two young men are very, very close to me. I am sad, I am heartbroken and angry,” he added. Atkinson also spoke about the deep bond between the brothers and their mother. “My aunt… her children mean the world to her. She lost two of her only sons,” he said.
Investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing.
