(Kaieteur News) – Administrative and teaching staffers of Camille’s Academy Inc (CAI) have been exposed to some much needed training in pediatric first aid, CPR and other types of emergency response care.
The training was faciltated by corporate training and business consultancy firm, Cerulean Inc on March 20 last. Approximately 20 staffers of the academy participated in a course aimed at equipping educators to handle emergencies such as choking, asthma attacks, and injuries, and other emergency situations.
Academic Director and founder of CAI, Dr. Camille Deokie-Gorakh explained that one of a series of training in First Aid Response to be rolled out at the school.
She explained: “This is the first of a series of sessions to ensure each teacher is also a trained first aider. This 1st phase was for teachers, the nursery department and Heads of Department for primary and secondary…All head teachers, P.E instructors, fitness coach and even the transport officer were trained”
The Academic Director noted that the CAI hopes to set an example for other schools that have yet to introduce the programme to staffers and students.
“This is important knowledge and training; I believe all teachers and administrators, those dealing with children should have… We have been doing this constantly to ensure our teachers are equipped in the case of emergencies, she revealed adding that the 2nd training will include another batch of 20 teachers.”
Facilitator of the programme, Michelle Gentle told this publication that the first aid training is especially important for teachers and schools because they are responsible for the safety of children in a setting where accidents and health emergencies can happen at any time.
She said: “Having trained staff can make a critical difference in outcomes. In emergencies like choking, severe bleeding, or cardiac arrest, the first few minutes are crucial. Trained teachers can act quickly before medical help arrives, potentially saving a child’s life.”
Gentle noted that students, especially the younger ones are more prone to falls, injuries, allergic reactions, and sudden illnesses.
“Schools need adults who can recognise symptoms early and respond appropriately,” she said.

According to Gentle, proper first aid can prevent a situation from getting worse. For example, correctly treating a burn or stabilizing a fracture can reduce complications and recovery time.
“When staffers are trained, it creates a safer school environment. The entire school becomes more prepared and confident in handling emergencies. This builds trust among parents, students, and the community.”
The facilitator emphasized too that having staffers trained supports legal and duty-of-care responsibilities of the institution
“Schools have a responsibility to ensure student safety. First aid training helps staff meet health and safety standards and reduces liability risks,” she said
Additionally, she noted while emergencies can cause panic, training equips teachers with the confidence to stay calm, take control, and guide students safely.
“While not all situations are life-threatening, cuts & bruises, nosebleeds, and fainting happen regularly, trained staff can manage these quickly and appropriately without unnecessary escalation,” she said.
Besides its personal benefit, the facilitator noted a teacher’s first aid knowledge can be shared with students, helping them learn basic safety skills and responsibility for themselves and others.
Gentle told this newspaper that Cerulean Inc is teaming up various organisations’ to offer critical training in emergency response. We also offer HSI Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) programme which gives teenagers and young adults everything they need to know for safe and successful babysitting.
“The HSI CABS teaches how to start a babysitting business, interact with parents and provides important safety and first aid information using the latest 2020 guidelines,” she said.
