(Kaieteur News) – An 87-year-old woman is counting her blessings after her home was broken into and ransacked while she was away, an ordeal that could have taken a far more dangerous turn.
Bibi Kulsum, a pensioner of Lot 44, Blairmont Settlement, West Bank Berbice, returned to her two-storey home on Saturday morning to find it in complete disarray. Furniture was overturned, rooms were rummaged through, and the house bore clear signs of forced intrusion.
“When meh come home, meh see the place tumble up. The side door open and somebody go upstairs and tumble up the whole house,” the elderly woman recalled.
Kulsum, who lives alone during the day but spends nights at her son’s nearby home, had left her residence on Friday evening as part of her usual routine. It was only upon her return around 07:00 hrs that she discovered the break-in.
Despite the intrusion, she is most grateful that she was not at home at the time.
While she is still assessing what may have been taken, Kulsum noted that no money or jewellery appeared to be missing.
The matter was reported at the No. 2 Police Outpost, and she was later directed to the Rosignol Police Station. Up to press time, no arrests had been made.
The incident has shaken the elderly resident, who said she has lived in the community all her life without ever experiencing such a violation.
“The place was a very good place. This area here was very good,” she lamented.
Kulsum’s ordeal comes amid growing concern in the Blairmont community, as another pensioner, a 66-year-old woman who also lives alone, was attacked and sexually assaulted during a separate home invasion on the same evening.
Haunted by that incident, Kulsum said she is thankful to have escaped unharmed.
