Kaieteur Sports – The World Masters Hockey Indoor World Cup is a global tournament that brings together veteran field hockey players from around the world, offering athletes aged 35 and above the chance to compete on an international stage.
Sanctioned by World Masters Hockey, the event fosters camaraderie, competition, and celebration of hockey at all levels. This year, the tournament is scheduled to take place in Nottingham, England, between March 26th and 31st at the David Ross Sports Facility on the Nottingham University campus.
In 2024, Guyana made a remarkable debut in the Over 45 Men’s Division, entering the event with little to no expectations. The team delivered impressive performances, remaining undefeated until the gripping final, where they narrowly lost to host nation England 5-4, thus securing the silver medal. This success impacted participation this year, with Guyana entering four teams in the Men’s over 40, 50, and 55 divisions, as well as the Women’s Over 40.
President of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Philip Fernandes, said, “In my opinion, the strongest contender would be the over-40 Men’s team; we have some guys who have managed to keep themselves fit and are very skillful, and I think that is a team that could pull some surprises.”
“Last outing, the pace of some of our players is what gave us the edge, and we have that kind of speed in our over-40 group,” Fernandes shared.
He explained, “The over-50s have good intelligence and maturity, and we are hoping that could give us an advantage, but you find that at this level and at the world level you have a lot of teams with that experience and understanding of the game, and then in the over-55s it’s an unknown division because you never know what other countries will have in that age group.”
The hockey president disclosed that: “the last time we were the unknowns, and teams were not really looking out for us to cause any damage, we caught them off guard. This time, they will be looking for Guyana.”
The President went on to say that he was particularly happy that Guyana has a female team representing Guyana this year. The ladies comprise mostly of a core of players who represented Guyana from the mid 2000s for several years, some of whom continue to play a competitive brand of hockey today.
Preparation for the 2026 campaign has been thorough and strategic. Teams have benefited from improved access to the sports hall, which now features upgraded facilities, allowing for regular training sessions and practice matches. Limited use of the facility was a shortcoming in 2024 because of the activities they had; this year, due to its availability, practice sessions have been more realistic.
The success of Guyana’s masters’ teams would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors. The women’s team received major backing from CEVONS Waste Management and Guinness, as well as successful fundraisers made possible by community participation. The Over 55 Men’s team was sponsored by A&D Elevators (USA), Lyft Gym, Caribbean Sea Waves, and CSS – Integrated Maritime Solutions.
All teams were provided with winter jackets by Rockhard Cement. The Guyana Hockey Board and all participating players extend their deepest gratitude to every sponsor, donor, family member, and friend who has supported their journey.
The Guyana Masters teams are set and ready to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the 2026 World Masters Hockey Indoor World Cup. Their journey is a testament to the power of preparation, teamwork, and community support. With a foundation of experience, new talent, and unwavering backing from sponsors and supporters, they aim to make their mark once again on the world stage.
