(Kaieteur News) – A 24-year-old taxi driver and his passenger, a 33-year-old woman were killed on Friday evening in an accident along the Airy Hall Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. Four children were also injured in the accident.
Dead are Seerochanie Khemraj of Tuchen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) and Nicklas Lillah of Lot 918 Tuchen Housing Scheme, EBE. Khemraj was a mother of one, while Lillah leaves behind two young children.
The injured include Khemraj’s 14-year-old daughter, along with three other relatives: a 14-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old boy. They were all taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for various injuries.
According to a Guyana Police Force (GPF) report, preliminary investigations revealed that Lillah was driving hire car HD 5859 east along the northern side of Huntly Public Road, Mahaicony, behind a line of traffic. While attempting to overtake the line of vehicles, his car collided with the rear-view mirror of motor car PAN 2760, which was proceeding in the same direction ahead of him.
“The driver of hire car # HD 5859 continued east at a fast rate of speed, as he approaches Airy Hall public road and in the process of negotiating a sharp left bend, he lost control of his vehicle which collided with an aluminium rail on the eastern side of the said road, continued north on the eastern side and collided with a GPL pole,” police said.
The impact of the collision left the hire car extensively damaged. Lillah and Khemraj, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained severe injuries to their heads and bodies. They were both found in an unconscious state at the scene and were transported to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The four children, who were passengers in the vehicle at the time, also suffered injuries and were rushed to the same hospital, where they remain under medical care.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and has left both families in deep mourning.
Speaking with Kaieteur News on Saturday, Lillah’s father, 48-year-old Jamie Lillah, expressed immense grief over the sudden and tragic loss of his eldest son. Through tears, he described Nicklas as “the first to come and the first to go.”
“I saw Nicklas yesterday morning around 8:00 hrs. We spoke for a while before I left for work. When I came back home around 16:00 hrs., I didn’t see him,” the grieving father recounted.
He explained that he later became aware of the tragedy after his wife received a phone call. “I heard her talking, and then I heard her say, ‘No, it can’t be my son.’ My daughter come outside with the phone and when I pick up the phone, I see my son lay down in a grass corner like it was an animal get knock down and dead. I can’t catch myself up to now,” he said.
Jamie Lillah noted that his son had been working as a taxi driver for a number of years and was well known in the community. He said Nicklas was often privately hired by the Khemraj family to transport them on various trips.
According to him, on the day of the accident, his son had been hired to take the family to Berbice to visit relatives.
“He left about 4:00 p.m., when he reach Mahaicony it had a very difficult turn so as he approach the turn, he mirror and the other vehicle mirror knock and then he lash into the pole and the vehicle topple over four times. I assume that while the vehicle was toppling, he pelt out the vehicle,” the father said.
The grieving father also emphasized that his son was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
“He was a sober person going on that trip,” he stressed. “This is a real shock. I never expect this to happen. He does drive long but for somehow I don’t know how this happen,” the father added.
Nicklas Lillah leaves behind two young children, a two-year-old and an infant.
Efforts to contact relatives of Khemraj were unsuccessful, as the family is too distraught to speak.
