Hamilton Green Cup 2026… Sixteen remaining teams to battle for quarterfinals spots
Kaieteur Sports – The Hamilton Green Cup will determine its quarterfinalists today and tomorrow as the annual nine-a-side Inter Ward/Village Knockout Football Championship edges closer to crowning its 2026 champions.
Action shifts to the Plaisance ground today, where four highly anticipated encounters will decide the first set of teams advancing to the next round of the competition.
A total of sixteen teams are battling for a share of $800,000 in prize money. The eventual champions will claim $500,000, along with the championship trophy and medals. The runners-up will receive $200,000, while the third and fourth place finishers will earn $100,000 and $50,000, respectively.
Longstanding sponsors Ricks and Sari will also present hampers to the tournament winners, adding to the rewards. Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, a strong supporter of football, has contributed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as part of the wider backing from civil and corporate Guyana.
Pouderoyen ‘B’ to tackle Golden Stars for quarterfinal spot as Hamilton Green cup continues.
Meanwhile, tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur has introduced an additional feature to this year’s competition a “winner-takes-all” exhibition segment on the night of the finals, scheduled for April 2, where the victorious teams will compete for a $50,000 cash prize.
Corporate support for the tournament continues to grow, with sponsors including E-Networks, Busta, Aurora Gold Mines, Gafsons Industries, Toolsie Persaud Ltd., Cummings Electrical Company Ltd, Star Rentals, China Trading, and Correia & Correia, among several others.
Today’s fixtures feature four exciting matchups. West Side Alliance will open the evening’s action against Pouderoyen ‘A’ at 7:00 pm, with both teams aiming to secure a place in the quarterfinals after convincing first-round victories.
In the second game, another West Side outfit, Zeelugt, will face Beavers. While Beavers appear the stronger side on paper, Zeelugt’s solid defensive play could prove a decisive factor in the contest.
The third encounter will see Buxton Stars take on Order and Discipline, with Buxton hoping to overcome their disciplined opponents to continue their campaign.
Closing out the night’s action, West Side powerhouse Pouderoyen ‘B’ will clash with Golden Stars to complete the lineup of teams advancing from Saturday’s play.
On Sunday, the remaining quarterfinal spots will be decided when Mocha meets Black Pearl, Plaisance battles Liliendaal, Victoria faces No. 1 All Stars, and Mahaica goes head-to-head with Melanie for a place in the final eight.
