(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL Inc.) technicians attached to Transmission & Distribution Zones 1 and 11 have been trained in internationally accepted tower climbing techniques.
In a statement via its Facebook page on Thursday, the company said that the technicians successfully completed the Transmission Tower Climbing Training Exercise, which was carried out at the Goedverwagting Substation, and is a part of ongoing efforts to build local capacity and enhance workplace safety.
“The training, facilitated by Kalpataru Projects International Limited, brought together technicians from Transmission & Distribution Zones 1 and 11. Participants were exposed to critical pre-climb safety briefings, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and internationally accepted tower climbing techniques for both 69kV and 230kV transmission towers,” GPL said.
One of the key highlights of the exercise was a live safety simulation, where participants had to execute a mock rescue of an injured and unconscious climber who was suspended on a tower. This drill demonstrated emergency preparedness, teamwork and the importance of having onsite trained rescue support. Several technicians under close supervision successfully completed their first tower climbs, a display of confidence, discipline and strong commitment to safety.
“The exercise also provided valuable observations that will guide improvements in safety gear, training standards, and future climbing operations. This initiative forms part of GPL’s wider preparations as it continues to modernize operations and prepare for expanded transmission infrastructure, including projects linked to the Gas-to-Energy Programme,” GPL added.
The company said that it remains committed to upskilling its workforce, while protecting employee welfare and safeguarding the national electrical infrastructure.
