Motorcyclist killed in crash while overtaking on turn

(Kaieteur News) – An Essequibo man was killed on Sunday when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a hire car while he was reportedly overtaking another vehicle at a turn along the Charity New Road Public Road, Essequibo Coast, Region Two.

The dead man has been identified as Stephen Seenauth, 21, of Charity Squatting Area, Essequibo Coast.

According to police, Seenauth was riding an unregistered motorcycle west along the roadway when he attempted to overtake another vehicle as the vehicles approached a turn. He reportedly lost control and ended up in the path of a hire car travelling east at about 60 kilometres per hour.

Police said their investigations revealed that Seenauth was travelling at a fast rate when he made the overtaking manoeuvre.

The hire car was being driven by a man known as ‘Match Stick’, who reportedly told investigators that he attempted to swerve to avoid the motorcycle. However, the motorcycle clipped the left front side of the car.

The impact reportedly flung Seenauth from the motorcycle, causing him to land a short distance away on the asphalted roadway.

Public-spirited citizens subsequently picked him up in an unconscious condition and rushed him to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The hire car driver was detained by police for questioning and subjected to a breathalyser test. Police said the test detected 13 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.

Investigators have also checked the area for CCTV footage that could assist with the probe, but no cameras were found.

Kaieteur News was told that police intend to prosecute the hire car driver as investigations continue.
