(Kaieteur News) – ExxonMobil Guyana on Monday launched the Guyana STEM Teacher Training: Enhancing Learning, Leadership and Academic Rigour (STELLAR) programme, a transformative teacher development initiative designed to strengthen STEM education and elevate student outcomes in secondary schools across Guyana.

As the first major programme under the Guyana STEM Initiative (GSI), ExxonMobil Guyana’s US$100 million, 10-year commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education nationwide, STELLAR represents a strategic investment in the country’s future STEM workforce by building educator capacity, strengthening instructional excellence and fostering leadership within the education system.

The oil company said beginning in August 2026, 60 pre-service secondary school educators from across Guyana will undertake specialised training in mathematics and science through the Cyril Potter College of Education. Over the two-year programme, participants will develop advanced content knowledge, evidence-based instructional practices and leadership competencies that will enable them to deliver engaging, high-quality STEM learning experience in classrooms throughout the country. “Through hands-on STEM learning, laboratory experiences, inquiry-based instruction, and classroom practice, teachers will gain the skills needed to engage students in critical thinking, problem-solving, and discovery,” said Alvin Abraham, President, ExxonMobil Foundation. “They will be prepared not just to teach STEM, but to inspire it.”

The programme begins with participants engaging in an intensive week-long training designed to introduce the STELLAR framework, establish expectations and build a strong foundation for their academic and professional journey. “You are going to be a part of a revolutionary team because STEM is going to revolutionise education for the future,” the Honourable Sonia Parag, Minister of Education, said to the pre-service teachers. “This isn’t just teaching; this isn’t just another CPCE programme. This is innovation, this is technology, and this is the future of your country.”

Through investments in teacher development, student-focused opportunities and world-class STEM learning infrastructure, GSI aims to create a vibrant STEM ecosystem that prepares Guyanese students to lead, innovate and compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy. Guyana STELLAR serves as the foundation of that vision, equipping educators with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to inspire excellence in the classroom and strengthen STEM outcomes across Guyana.

By investing in educator development today, ExxonMobil is helping to build the talent, leadership and innovation capacity that will drive Guyana’s future development for generations to come. The Guyana STEM Initiative is a US$100 million, 10-year investment by ExxonMobil Guyana to strengthen STEM education nationwide. The initiative includes the development of two STEM centres, teacher training and certification through the Guyana STELLAR programme, and other strategic interventions aimed at enhancing educational outcomes, building local capacity and preparing Guyanese students for future opportunities in STEM-related fields.
