Corentyne youth dies after collision with truck
(Kaieteur News) – Joshua Crawford, a 26-year-old mechanic of Lot 21 Alness Village, Corentyne lost his life after he was involved in a road accident at Nigg Public Road, Corentyne on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at about 05:11 hours, according to police in Region Six, and involved motorcar # PZZ 5030, which was owned and driven by Crawford, and a motor lorry # GAF 3405, owned by Raveena Biysoondial, of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice. The lorry was reportedly driven by 29-year-old Raymond Swamber, also of Alness Village.

Police stated that at the time, the lorry was heading east along the northern drive lane on the above-mentioned road, proceeding allegedly at a normal rate of speed, while Crawford was proceeding west along the southern drive lane. Crawford’s car reportedly suddenly turned north into the lane of the motor lorry, which resulted in a collision between the two vehicles.
Due to the crash, Crawford received severe injuries about his body and was removed from the wrecked car in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens. He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty.
He was transferred immediately to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further medical attention. Upon arrival, he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.
Crawford was the eldest of three children. His sister, J. Simon spoke to Kaieteur News on Tuesday, disclosing that she last saw her brother on Monday just after 12, when he came to her to retrieve some money, and they interacted for approximately 5 minutes before he left. She explained that a video she saw indicated that her brother was attempting to swerve, and the side of his car caught the truck.
She told Kaieteur News that she was contacted around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
“I heard about the accident when my aunt called but she didn’t say what it was. So I called her back and she said ‘just be strong’ and she ‘has some pictures to send’. After that I message my brother’s fiancee and asked if Joshua is alright. She said ‘no’. I then called his phone and I’m guessing a nurse answered and she asked who I was, and that if I can make it to the NA hospital.”

After confirming that she can, Simon made preparations immediately to travel to the hospital, but just as she was nearing Rose Hall, another aunt called and informed her that her brother had succumbed due to the accident.
Crawford was recently employed at NTS Amega Global, located in Georgetown, but left almost a month ago as he was gearing to migrate to the USA in September. He was a graduate of the Port Mourant Training Centre, and obtained a certificate as fixer machinist. A skillful tradesman, he was employed at the Albion Estate, before enlisting at BACIF.
“My brother was a loving and good person. Anything you asked for, he would give. He loved anything to do with fix, breaking down and putting together vehicles, and other machinery. He was a very hardworking and dedicated person to his trade…that was my only brother and he’s gone. I can’t call him when things don’t go right, when I need help or anything,” his sister shared with this publication.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the lorry, Raymond Swamber, which showed readings of 16 and 13 micrograms.
He is in custody assisting with the investigations.
