(Kaieteur News) – A post-mortem examination carried out on the body of 14-year-old Aleena Preetam who recently gave birth, determined that her cause of death was heart failure and anaemia.
Preetam was found dead at her home in Good Hope, Essequibo, Region Two, on Monday. Police said the examination was conducted on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary. The procedure was performed by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh. Following the examination, the teen’s body was handed over to her family for burial.
Preliminary enquiries revealed that the teen, who resided with her parents and her one-month-old child, was last seen alive on Sunday evening. On Monday morning family members attempted to wake her but found her unresponsive. She was escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Preetam’s body was examined and no marks of violence were observed.
Police said, “Investigations are ongoing and will address all relevant offences under the law arising from the circumstances of this matter.”
Kaieteur News had reported that the teen was found unresponsive in her bedroom after her baby was heard crying for a prolonged period. Concerned relatives went to check on the infant and found Preetam motionless on her bed.
Regional Commander, Superintendent Khemraj Shivbaran has confirmed that an investigation has been launched and that authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Preetam’s sister-in-law, Ameena Ramzan, said she had checked on the teen the night before her death. “I just asked her how she and the baby were doing, and she said they were alright. I asked if she was sure, and she said yes,” Ramzan recalled.
