(Kaieteur News) – A 15-year-old teen mother, on Monday morning, was found dead at her home in Good Hope, Essequibo, Region Two leaving behind her one-month-old baby.
Dead is Aleena Preetam, a former student of Abram Zuil Secondary School, who recently dropped out after being transferred to another institution when she discovered she was pregnant.
Kaieteur News understands that the teen was found unresponsive in her bedroom after her baby was heard crying for a prolonged period. Concerned relatives went to check on the infant and found Preetam motionless on her bed.
The circumstances surrounding the teen’s death remain unclear.
Regional Commander, Superintendent Khemraj Shivbaran, confirmed that an investigation has been launched and that authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Preetam’s sister-in-law, Ameena Ramzan, said she had checked on the teen the night before her death.
“I just asked her how she and the baby were doing, and she said they were alright. I asked if she was sure, and she said yes,” Ramzan recalled.
News of the teen’s sudden death has deeply shocked her family and community. Relatives took to social media to express their grief.
“Rip my beautiful sister-in-law, I can’t believe that I hear your gone this morning may you rest in peace our belove Aleena. What will happen with my little princess niece?” Ramzan said.
Another relative, Shameeza Ramzan, wrote, “Why Aleena, why so soon? You left without saying goodbye. You left shocking news this morning to all of us. You will be missed and beloved forever. May your soul rest in peace.”
Police investigations are ongoing.
